El Manantial

This area has a simple setup of pools fed by a spring of mineral waters with curative properties.

Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua (San Antonio de Padua Church)

Built in the 18th century, this is the most popular religious structure in the municipality. It displays some baroque elements.

Capilla de San Miguel (San Miguel Chapel)

This cultural building is made from blocks and glazed concrete. It has an extensive atrium, a dirt floor, and it is surrounded by a modern fence.

Capilla de San Diego (San Diego Chapel)

Located in Dos Cerros, the chapel is currently unused. A plaque at the chapel dates back to 1667.

Capilla del Calvario (Calvary Chapel)

The chapel is rectangular and made of brick and lime. The façade is a painted, level, symmetrical composition.

Capilla de los Santos Reyes (The Santos Reyes Chapel)

Located in the center of the town, this monument was constructed in two stages, which explains the different architecture.

Templo y ex Convento del Sagrario (Sagrario Temple and Old Convent)

The temple and convent were constructed by the Augustines in 1570. They are a good example of the plateresque style of architecture.

Reloj Municipal (Municipal Clock)

This tower is made of four pieces of volcanic rock and dates back to 1908. The bells ring at 9:00 a.m. and sometimes play songs.

This Augustine monastery was constructed during the 16th century.

This is the best example of architecture from the 16th century. It was an important meeting place for the indigenous people of the region.

La Casita de Piedra (The Little Stone House)

Constructed in a large 10 x 5 meter rock, Brother Bernardo used this space to build in the 16th century.

Laguna de Atezca (Aztec Lake)

This property dates back to 1742. In the entrance, there is a patio that gives way to the granary, corrals, the stables, the first floor of the large house and the chapel dedicated to San Francisco.

Hacienda de Chimalpa (Chimalpa Hacienda)

Chimalpa Hacienda was the most important pulque producer, and currently is still one of the main suppliers of this drink in the Republic.

Hacienda de Santiago Tetlapayac (Santiago Tetlapayac Hacienda)

Hacienda de San Antonio Tochatlaco (San Antonio Tochatlaco Hacienda)

This hacienda dates back to 1840 and consists of a large central patio, chapel, entrance hall, towers, an office, the main house and two Sevillian-style patios.

This structure was built during the 16th century but was recently reconstructed and adorned. It has many beautiful architectural elements.

EMILIANO ZAPATA

Hacienda de San Lorenzo (San Lorenzo Hacienda)

Hacienda de San Lorenzo was a large-scale pulque producer during its height. It is a beautiful structure full of history and is one of the most representative of this area.

ZEMPOALA

Hacienda Casa Grande (Large House Hacienda)

This hacienda is located in the center of Zempoala and dates back to 1860. It is distinguished by its 18 arches made of rose quartz that form the main façade.

These structures were built by the Fransicans in the 16th century.

La Picota de Zempoala (ó Monumento de Piedra Labrada)

This is a unique monument from the 16th century. This column is carved with Spanish shields.

Acueducto del Padre Tembleque (Father Tembleque Aqueduct)

This is a notable example of civil engineering from the viceregal era. The third arch of the aqueduct crosses a ravine that is a little over 1,000 meters deep.

Templo y ex Convento de San Miguel Arcángel (The San Miguel Arcangel Temple and Old Convent)
This is an Augustinian structure built in the typical convent/fortress style dating back to the 16th century. It is of great interest because it is made up of many different styles.
Templo de El Carmen (El Carmen Temple)
This is one of the few elaborate works in the state that dates back to the 17th century, with an exaggerated facade of great artistic style.
La Diana Cazadora
The main plaza holds the famous sculpture of La Diana Cazadora. The replica of this sculpture can be found in the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City.
Balneario el Te-Pathé (Te-Pathé Spa)
This is a very large and beautiful spa. It has a water park with water slides, a swimming pool and a diving board and restaurant.
Paraíso Humedades
This is a place for family fun! There is a water park with a capacity of 400 people. It has two swimming pools, lots of green areas with palm trees, camping, and plenty of parking.
Parque Acuático Club Alcántara (Alcántara Club Water Park)
This is a water park with a capacity of 200 people. There is a swimming pool and water slide, a hotel, restaurant, bar, a building for events and plenty of parking.
ACTOPAN
Templo y ex Convento de San Nicolás de Tolentino (The San Nicolás de Tolentino Temple and Old Convent)
This temple was founded in the year 1550 by the Augustines and is considered one of a kind with its grandiose and elegant Mexican colonial architecture.
El Mercado de Actopan (The Actopan Market)
Every Wednesday, for more than 400 years, the city has had an outdoor market. The streets of Actopan are adorned with supplies like saddlery, colorful textiles, hats, showy alpisteras (small cakes), fruits and vegetables, artistic wax candles, fine shawls and delicate crafts so tourists can have a memory of their visit.
Centro Histórico (Historical Center)
Recently remodeled, the Historical Center of the City of Actopán has refurbished the original architecture and 16th century urban decorations making it a splendid work of art.
Pinturas Rupestres del Arco (Arco Cave Paintings)
The caves are located on the border of the city of Actopan. One of the paintings is of a mature woman. Her right hand holds the sun and her other hand holds the moon.
Los Órganos (ó Los Frailes)
Near this city are gigantic monoliths. Due to the high altitude of their location, the monoliths can be admired from all over the state. It is a very popular destination for mountain and rock climbers.
CARDONAL
Parroquia de la Purísima Concepción (Parish of the Purest Conception)
The architecture and beauty of this Church that was constructed in the 16th century is Augustine style. In the chapel are some of the most beautiful baroque altarpieces in the country.
Santuario de Mapethé (Mapethé Sanctuary)
Just seven kilometers north of the capital is a religious site of great devotion, which is visited by thousands of faithful followers.
Grutas de Tolantongo y La Gloria (Tolantongo and La Gloria Caverns)
Exuberant vegetation, waterfalls, steep mountains and hills form the natural surroundings of this beautiful area.
Pinturas Rupestres (Cave Paintings)
In Rancheria del Santuario, on the south face of the rocks, are small cave paintings in red paint.
TECOZAUTLA
Reloj Monumental (Monumental Clock)
Tourists can visit the magnificent rock tower located in the center of the city.
Parroquia de San Santiago Apóstol (San Santiago Apóstol Parish)
This temple was constructed between 1690 and 1700.
Acueducto de los Arcos (ó Puente Colonial)
The “Acueducto de los Arcos,” southeast of town, was constructed during the colonial era in 1702.
Cascada El Tagui (El Tagui Waterfall)
A gorgeous hot spring called “Tlaxidhó” can be found at this waterfall. The hot spring is approximately 1 ½ meters deep at the side of the ravine. Visitors and tourists will enjoy the beautiful view and it is the perfect place to camp.
Géiser
In Tecozautla, near the town of Uxdejhé, you will find a magnificent natural hot spring with steamy, hot water that gets as high as 95º C. The water is later channeled to ponds with more pleasant temperatures.
Balneario El Arenal
This is a place to enjoy the beauty and the serenity of natural, cooler, constantly moving waters with a temperature of 38° C. This area also offers campsites, areas for barbecuing, soccer fields, and volleyball courts.
Balneario Gandhó
If you close your eyes at the Balneario Gandho which means “stone that sounds”, you will think you are in paradise with the ideal climate and beautiful flora. The crystal clear waters stay around 35° C with areas for children to swim, campgrounds, and other outdoor activities.
TASQUILLO
Balneario Tzindejhé
The large alkaline pond and smaller pool have temperate waters that come from the natural spring at about 35° C. From the springs, you can see the Moctezuma River.
SANTIAGO DE ANAYA
Iglesia del Señor de Santiago (Señor de Santiago Church)
Located in the Independence Plaza, in the center of the town, you’ll find, undoubtedly the most impressive church in the city. Students of architecture will be able to appreciate its complex beauty.
Grutas de Xoxafi (Xoxafi Caverns)
These caverns are perfect for spelunkers and adventure sports enthusiasts.
HUICHAPAN
Templo y ex Convento de San Mateo (San Mateo Temple and Old Convent)
The Augustine convent was built by Captain Manuel Gonzalez de Leon. Two remarkable altarpieces stand in the large atrium, one dedicated to the Life of Christ and the other to the Virgin Mary. The church has a simple facade and an open bell-tower. To the left can be seen an open chapel standing in front of a tall tower which was built later. The cloister ceiling is painted with frescos.
La Capilla de la Tercera Orden (The Chapel of the Third Order)
These two facades date from the 18th century and feature unique ornamental design typical of churches built during that time.
Capilla del Calvario (Calvario Chapel)
This chapel was built in the 18th century, thanks to the church’s benefactor, Manuel Gonzales de León, a native of Huichapan who was a captain of the Spanish infantry. The ornate facade of the church is made of stone with thin lines that give the impression of soft movement. Beautiful sculptures surround the ledges that represent the descent of Christ and a Blessed Virgin in the vestry.
Acueducto San José
In Saucillo, you’ll find the San Jose Aqueduct, a monumental work constructed in the 16th century to provide water to the people of the area. 14 of the impressive arches remain.

TULANCINGO

La Catedral de Tulancingo (The Tulancingo Cathedral)

This cathedral was built by the Franciscans in 1528. It is made of stone in the elegant neo-classical style.

Templo de Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Temple of Our Lady of Merced)

Although it’s been through many changes, construction of this temple began in 1892. Today, it is known for its neo-classical style.

Capilla de la Expiración (Chapel of the Expiration)

Built in 1526, the year the Franciscans arrived in Tulancingo, this chapel is thought to be one of the oldest in the region.

Jardín del Arte y Parque la Floresta (The Art Garden and Forest Park)

Within the park you will find the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Public Library and the “Ricardo Garibay” Cultural Center.

Zoo

The zoo holds 180 species and a total of 330 animals, including a hippopotamus, the zoo’s mascot.

ACAXOCHITLÁN

Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel)

This was the first church in Acaxochitlan. It was built in 1909 on the top of a small hill that resembles a pyramid.

Capilla de Los Tres Reyes (Chapel of the Three Kings)

This chapel houses some popular works of art and a baptismal font in two pieces.

Parroquia de Santa María de la Asunción (Santa Maria de la Asuncion Parish)

This building was constructed in the 16th century and its name was changed in 1996.

Cascadas de Chimila y San Francisco (Chimila and San Francisco Waterfalls)

These beautiful waterfalls are located in the Acaxochitlan municipality.

Santa Catarina

This is a natural attraction, where you can enjoy the river, a beautiful waterfall and delicious trout.

Presa el Tejocotal, Santa María Tzacuala y Omiltemetl (The Tejocotal, Santa Maria Txacuala and Omiltemetl Reservoirs)

Around the reservoirs you can find places to eat, and places to buy arts and crafts. This is a great place to spend a day in nature.

Las Vueltas

This is a forest of pine and conifers. It is a perfect place for cycling and hiking.

La Montaña Viviente (The Living Mountain)

This is a picturesque area located in the District of Tlatempa in Acaxochitlán. It is surrounded by a beautiful forest and offers activities such as, ecology, bird watching, and observation of wildlife and flowers.

El Cerro de las Cruces (The Hill of Crosses)

This is a wooded area located east of town. The hills are covered with pines and conifers. There is a chapel where mass is celebrated on the third day in May.

Cascada El Salto de Las Golondrinas

Located three km. from the capital of the municipality, is a great waterfall with an awe inspiring view. It is located in the Ejido de San Pedrito. It reaches a height of 150 meters. Around this great landscape you can walk, hike and camp.

Presa Chichicaxtle y Laguna (Chichicaxtle Lake and Reservoir)

Two bodies of water form a magnificent landscape with the help of wooded mountains. This area will inspire with its tranquility and peace. This is a perfect location to take the family. Both the reservoir and lake are suitable for sport fishing, mainly trout. Boat trips are available and are safe for younger participants.

Finca La Torre

Located in the higher regions, 2 kilometers from the capital of the municipality, Finca La Torre has become one of the great tourist attractions in the area. It offers services like trails, a greenhouse, a lake, stables, a pond, a library, and a small zoo with a variety of animals like zebras, ostriches, quail and llamas. It also has some small caverns with ancient paintings on the walls as well as kaolin mines which are a great boon to the local economy.

Pinturas Rupestres (Cave Paintings)

Within the Ejido Calabazas, on the way to Rosa de Castilla, and only a few kilometers from the capital, is a group of cave paintings within a small cave. The cave is approximately 5 meters high.

ACATLÁN

Hacienda El Lucero (The Lucero Hacienda)

This is an interesting place to visit. It has a restaurant that specializes in exotic food, such as, crocodile meat, deer, duck, ostrich, and buffalo, among other items.

Laguna de Zupitlán

This lake is located three kilometers from the capital. It is great for fishing (especially carp and tilapia). It has a secure wharf that is perfect for rowing. Boat rides are also available.

METEPEC

Parroquia del Señor de Metepec (Senor de Metepec Parish)

This is a gorgeous 16th century construction that is worth a visit to see the altarpieces and its colonial style touches. The style of the front is mainly neo-classical from the Porfiriato era.

Hacienda de Apulco (The Apulco Hacienda)

This hacienda belonged to Sr. Diego Rodriguez, Capitan of Hernan Cortes who participated in the conquest of Tenochtitlán.

Presa de Metepec (Metepec Reservoir)

The reservoir is only about three square kilometers. It is actually a small reservoir formed by the artificial currents of the Meztitlan and Tulancingo rivers. It is an excellent place to fish.

SAN BARTOLO TUTOTEPEC

Parroquia de los Santos Reyes (The Santos Reyes Parish)

This Parish is in Ranchería de Tutotepec and is located in the center of town. It was built by the Augustine missionaries and was completed in 1620.The portico was constructed from cut stone. It also has a bell tower with three bells that were constructed from brick and concrete.

Parroquia de San Bartolo (The San Bartolo Parish)

This parish was built using the walls of an old chapel. Today, it displays a Latin cross and marble tiles on the floor. The facade and the bell tower are of a contemporary design.

Grutas de San Bartolo (San Bartolo Caverns)

Approximately three kilometers northwest of San Bartolo, in the northern mountain range near the Tenango River, we find extraordinary formations. The entrance is located at the bottom of a gorge. Although they are small, they are definitely worth visiting. It’s a great place to enjoy the beautiful mountains and participate in adventure sports.

MINERAL DEL MONTE
Parroquia de la Asunción (The Asunción Parish)
The Parroquia de la Asuncion is located in front of the main plaza. Construction began in 1563 and features a neo-classic-style altar.
La Capilla de Veracruz (Veracruz Chapel)
This was the second temple built in Real del Monte by the Franciscan friars from Pachuca. Two beautiful, golden altarpieces built during the second half of the 18th century can be found inside.
La Capilla del Señor de Zelontla (Senor de Zelontla Chapel)
Señor de Zelontla is the patron saint of miners. The oak sculpture, created during the 17th century, is a representation of Christ, the Good Sheppard.
Ex Hospital Minero (Ex-Mining Hospital)
This hospital was built in 1907. When visiting the hospital, you can still see surgical instruments from that era.
Panteón Inglés (English Cemetery)
The magic, mystery and originality of the English Cemetery make this a strange but interesting attraction. Ask the guide to see the grave of Richard Bell, the first clown in Mexico.
Peñas Cargadas
Enormous stone columns, 80 meters tall, rise out of this beautiful green area.

Ex Hacienda de San Miguel Regla (The Old San Miguel Regla Hacienda)
This hacienda was built in the 18th century. The architecture has clear Spanish characteristics with very heavy walls and all the comforts available during that time, including gardens and a lake.
Ex Hacienda de Santa María Regla (The Old Santa Maria Regla Hacienda)
This hacienda, built during the 18th century, is surrounded by a spectacular landscape. It was home to the Conde de Regla (the Count).
Ex Hacienda de San Juan Hueyapan (The Old San Juan Hueyapan Hacienda)
This place is considered the “mother of all haciendas”. It was constructed in 1535 by a nephew of Hernán Cortés.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (San Juan Bautista Church)
This church was constructed in 1870. The architecture is very simple, without ornamentation and is currently home to the House of Culture.
Peñas del Aire (Air Rocks)
Near San Miguel Regla, you’ll find an enormous basalt rock, that at first glance, appears to be suspended in the air.
Prismas Basálticos (Basaltic Prisms)
These gigantic columns, discovered by Baron Humbolt in 1803, decorate the walls of an impressive ravine.

Parroquia de La Purísima Concepción (Parish of the Purest Conception)
This neo-classical style structure was built in 1725. The stone front of the parish is highlighted by tall, Tuscan columns, frieze ornamentation and a curved gable.
Parque Nacional El Chico (El Chico National Park)
This national park is a major tourist attraction with camp sites, cabins, and areas for mountain climbing, hiking and fishing.
Peña del Cuervo
This is one of the most popular spots in the park. It has a beautiful panoramic view that includes Mineral del Chico.
OMITLÁN DE JUÁREZ
Nuestra Señora del Refugio (Our Lady of Refuge)
Built in 1850, this building is characterized by its renaissance style. It is located in the center of the town, in Plaza Juárez.
Cascada Bandola (Bandola Waterfall)
Seven kilometers from the capital of the municipality, you will find the beautiful waterfall that originates in the springs of the mountainous area of Mineral del Chico.
Peña del Zumate
This rock formation overlooks the forest. It is ideal for rock climbing and motorcross.
